The Group Experience Part 2
Being Professional
Rowena Cory Daniells
The publishing industry is not a benevolent society established to nurture would-be authors. It is a highly competitive business. As best-selling author Anna Jacobs says, Your work doesn't have to be good- it has to sparkle! So polish your manuscript and present yourself professionally. The less work the editor has to do on your manuscript the better. When you present work to your group to be critiqued, do them the same courtesy.
- Be prepared. Don't scribble something the night before the meeting.
- Don't put in something you wrote 5 years ago and haven't looked at since.
Present it cleanly, as you would present a manuscript. (Double space, proportional font etc.)
- If your group has 12 members, print up 6 copies so that they can be shared between 2.
For more tips on how to present yourself as a professional writer, read my 'Aspiring Writers Checklist'.
